Today when you enter:
Ice breaker: Write a series of sentences describing your morning, from waking to arriving at school. No sentence can be more than four words long. This exercise will push you to consider active verbs.
Look at this model. All of them have active verbs. Here's one about my afternoon routine:
Mr. Vela drove home.
He walked his dog.
He made a sandwich.
Take 25 minutes for this segment, which will end at 9:25.
Part II: Look again at inverted pyramids. Use the definition that is on this worksheet:

Now, let's discuss an exercise which asks you to write not only a hard news story opening, but to create the whole story. Go to this page and read the exercise.
http://www.21stcenturylit.org/vWorksheet.php?index=66
It is 218 words long. Your job is to figure out what goes where. Which sentences belong in your lead? Which come in the middle? Which are the least important and go at the end of the story? This segment will take 30 minutes, 10 to model and 20 to write. You can use the cut and paste keys to help you arrange the story.
Do this in a word document and send it to me when you are done. Remember to put your name on the assignment. Call it the Coyote Lead piece.
last 20 minutes -- We will review the writing assignment and a past issue of the student newspaper. The goal is to have one done a month from now. The paper will be distributed during advisory class.
