In the previous class, you watched an opening from a newscast, and broke down an opening segment of that broadcast.
1. There was an intro, where the two anchors tossed to each other. The female anchor opened with a line about the woman who had been killed in a hit-and-run accident at McCallum High School before a Veteran's Day event. She said one sentence laying out "the tragedy."
2. The male anchor then picked up the line and gave the story lead, saying who she was, where and when she was struck and killed and the what, that she had been killed in the accident. He then said the station was going to focus on her life of service.
3. He then tossed to the anchor on site, saying, "KXAN's Jennifer Barrington has the story."
4. The reporter on site then began her VO/SOT,
a. for 20 seconds, she introduced the story
b. for a minute, we saw a video VO/SOT, that had shots of the woman's graduation photo, then a
photo of her taken recently. At this point, we saw the first SOT or sound byte, with a colleague
who explained how the old woman was dedicated to the military and helping veterans.
-- we then saw video of the graduation ceremony the victim was attending, where old veterans
from past wars finally got their high school diplomas. We then saw a second SOT with the
younger woman and during the third SOT, where the woman said, "the victim touched so many
lives" we saw a cutaway, where video of the reporter listening to the interviewee was shown.
5. The reporter then had a sign-off, where she said, "reporting live, this is Jennifer Barrington, KXAN
News." This is the anchors' cue to start on the next story in the newscast.
Today, I want you to write a VO/SOT script. It's about Adopt-a-Kid, which will be held next month. This is the third event, where needy kids from area elementary and middle schools come to classrooms at Eastside and get presents.
I am the anchor for the show, and imagine you are the reporter. He's my intro with a hard-news lead.
Today, Friday, is a special day at Eastside Memorial High. For the third year in a row, the school holds "Adopt-a-Kid" Needy children from Martin, O'Henry and Del Valle schools come to the High School and meet Santa Claus and his army of helpers, students who have prepared parties and wrapped presents to give these children the type of Christmas they might not get at home. Panther News' ________________ (fill in your name) is at the Eastside Cafeteria to cover the story:
In a Word document
Part One -- Look at my intro and identify the following parts:
Who, what, when, where, why
What is the toss?
Part Two -- then, write a VO/SOT covering the story.
1. What is your focus? Will you profile a child? Or cover one classroom that hosts a child?
(You can make up a subject)
2. Name your SOTs Interview TWO people for the story. Who would they be?
3. Make up one sound byte for each of them.
4. Conclude with a toss back to the anchor, or with a sign-off.
E-mail me your word file when you are done.
