In previous weeks we've done some assignments which show how people's identities are changed by "Frankenstein" type switches -- Oprah Winfrey's head is put on actress Ann Margaret's body. Governor Ann Richards' head is put on a motorcycle driving woman's body.
Look at this video clip below. Watch it a few times. It's very short, only one minute and 12 seconds. Watch how a "normal" looking woman is turned into a Barbie doll-like figure using lighting, makeup and a lot of Photoshop. Nearly every part of the original model is changed in Photoshop. The placement and the size of her eyes are changed. The color of her skin is changed twice. The length of her legs and her arms and neck are extended, and she's made "thinner" through trimming her stomach and thighs.
What results is a woman who is a complete fake. The ad says a campaign is being started to made advertisements which use Photoshop in this way disclose what they are doing.
Write a short essay answer the following questions about Photoshopping the body and the human face. When you are done, forward it to; [email protected]
1. What part of the photoshopping project amazed you the most?
2. Did you think the real woman is attractive or healthy looking?
3. Do you think the final, photoshopped woman is attractive?
4. Is the Barbie woman more or less attractive to you than the real one? Why do you say so?
5. Do you think this is done to men too? How might a "Ken doll" be created? The Barbie had weight trimmed away. Do you think the man would be made thinner, or beefier? Describe what you would do to make an "ordinary guy" more attractive through Photoshop?
6. Do you think this type of photoshop alteration is a good thing? Should ad-makers be required to disclose when their ads do something like this?
