In the last class, we made masks and used the puppet warp. Today, we'll learn how to apply shadows to text (and you can do this for a photo as well).
Step 1. Open Photoshop. Hit File>New to create a new project. When you get the new project box, enter these dimensions for your frame:
width: 5760 pixels
height: 3840 pixels
You'll get your white frame.
2. Hit the text tool. Select Braggadocio as the text font and make the text 300 points. Make these changes in your options bar.
3. Change the color of the text to any color that's not black. T hen write the words "Panther Pride"
4. Choose the magic wand tool from the bar. It's in the same button as the quick selection tool. Place the wand inside of a text letter and click it. That will select part of the title. Holding the shift key, move the wand into the rest of the text and continue clicking (and holding the button down) until all of "Panther Pride" is selected.
5. In the layer box on the right side, click the "add a pixel mask" button that's on the top right. This will create a mask for your selected text. The mask will appear in your layer.
6. Touch your cursor to the black mask icon in your text layer and command click it. You will see a mask in your channels panel, but nothing in your layer stack.
7. Choose SELECT from the meny bar and "save selection" from the drop-down menu. When you get a new box, write "Panther Outline" in the name box and click the "OK" button.
8. Create a new layer, either from the layer drop down or by clicking the new layer button at the bottom of the layers box on your right side of the work space. (It's next to the trash can icon.)
9. Drag this new layer below your mask layer, or drag the mask layer above it.
-- click on the new unnamed layer. slowly click it twice to activate the name and re-name it "Shadow"
10. With the shadow layer selected, choose SELECT in the menu bar and "REFINE EDGE" from the drop-down menu. Move the "shift edge" slider in the box that appears to 50.
11. Choose EDIT from the menu bar and FILL from the dropdown menu. Choose black as the color of the shadow and hit OK.
12. In your layer box on the right of your work station, you'll see an OPACITY box that's preset to 100. Click on it and move the slider to 50%. This controls the darkness of your shadow.
13. Choose SELECT from the menu bar, then DESELECT from the dropdown. This will take the selection action off the words "Panther Pride."
14. Click EDIT in the menu bar, then TRANSFORM> SKEW from the drop-down menu. A frame will appear over the words "Panther Pride." This is actually over the shadow, which you can't see right now, but which is directly beneath the words "Panther Pride."
15. Move the corners and edges to resize and re-shape the shadow. Play with it a bit to get it exactly where and how you want it.
16. Choose FILE from the menu bar, then SAVE. Change the format to JPEG and name it Panther Shadow.
17. e-mail your shadow jpeg project to me.
