Today, I'm going to show you an effect that makes text look as if it is on fire. You will apply a "wind" effect to text, which makes it look like the wind is blowing across your letters. then you will apply a ripple effect to the wind effect, to make it appear like flame is coming off your text.
Finally, you'll change the color to make the effect look orange, and on fire.
Follow these steps.
1. Open a new document in Photoshop.
FILE>NEW
You will see a box that asks you to set the size and character of your background frame. Input the following:
Size
width: 7 inches
height: 5 inches
resolution: 72 pixels/inch
Color mode: greyscale
You'll see a small white frame
2. Using your brush tool, color the background black
3. create a new layer. Re-name it text
4. using the text tool, change the color of your text to white and type the word "fire" in 60 point type in the middle of the frame. Make sure you are working in the type layer.
5. Rasterize the layer
Layer>Rasterize>Type
6. Using the move tool, move the text to the lower right part of your frame
7. Flatten the image (this will merge all your layers into one)
Layer> Flatten
8. Add the wind effect
Filter>stylize>wind
You'll get a dialogue box. In the settings at the bottom of the box, select the "Direction from the right" option and click OK
9. Make the wind effect longer by doing the
Filter>stylize>wind effect again. If you do it a third time, the effect will get stronger. That's optional.
10. make the wind effect look like a flame:
FILTER>DISTORT>RIPPLE
You'll get another box. Set the effect to 60% and click OK
11. IMAGE>MODE>INDEX COLOR
You won't see a change, but do this:
12. IMAGE>MODE>COLOR TABLE
You'll get another box. In the drop-down menu at the top, select "black body"
This will change the color of your text from white to orange, and make the text look like it is on fire.
Now, once you've done that, work through these steps a second time. THis is your assignment to turn in. This time, use your NAME instead of Fire. When you have a project of your name on fire, save it as a PNG file and e-mail it to me.
